Reading two-thirds of the calculus book to prepare for tomorrowâs test makes my eyes cross. Not literally, but they feel crossed. Whoever thought this was helpful information to have? Math should not need letters.
When my phone lights up, I use it as an excuse to slam the book shut.
âInara,â I answer. âHowâs Hawaii?â
âBreezy, perfect.â
âAnd my twin?â I flop back on the bed.
âIrritable, apparently.â Inara drops to a whisper. âThis morning she killed someone during her sparring.â
âWhoa.â I swallow. âWho?â
âNihils.â
He had kind eyes and a startlingly clear singing voice. He used to write songs in his downtime. âWhy? Why would she do that?â
âYour guess is as good as mine. She didnât give any reason, and it wonât surprise you that she didnât even apologize to his mother. Iâve spent all morning calming her down, which is why I only have a minute. Iâve been pondering something and decided to share my thoughts with you.â
âOkay.â I try, unsuccessfully, to shake the ominous feeling that slithers up my spine.
âHow positive are you that Judica killed Mother?â
I nearly drop my phone. Not at all what I expected her to ask me. âUh, pretty sure.â
âBut not one hundred percent?â
I think back on how often Judica joined us for breakfast. She knew Mom loved eggs, but so did the entire kitchen staff. Judica was one of the few people who knew about the EMP, and she was smart enough to guess what Momâs reaction might be. Which means Judica was the one who had the most to gain from Momâs death, or so she thought. I close my eyes and replay the memory again, and again, and again. When Mom died, Judica didnât even seem upset. She looked more guilty than anything else.
âNinety-nine point nine nine nine nine,â I say.
âWhich isnât one hundred,â she says.
âYouâre really good at math,â I say. âMaybe you should fly out and take my calculus test.â
âYou canât do it,â Inara says.
âDo what? Have someone else take my test?â I sigh. âI didnât think so either, but it sure would be nice.â
âNo,â Inara snaps. âYou canât kill her. No matter what magic Edam may work, if you arenât one thousand percent positive.â She cuts off and clears her throat. âI know you, little Chancy. You wonât be able to do what it takes unless youâre sure.â
I hate that Iâm so transparent. âWell, you and Edam agree on that.â
âEven if youâve improved, it wonât be enough. Judicaâs gotten better too. Something happened to her when Mother died. Sheâs. . . savage now, in a way she wasnât before.â
I dig my toe into the carpet. She was the most uninhibited fighter Iâd ever seen. What must she be like now, to have Inara describe her as more savage than before?
âTake his offer.â
I donât throw the phone across the room. I donât crumple it in my hand. I donât growl into the speaker.
âChancery? Are you there?â
âIâm here.â
âWell, youâll do what you want, but my advice is that you either abdicate or take the escape hatch heâs offering.
